If it’s just grayed or not active, it means nothing was copied and you need to go back to the copy and try again. Use the edit -> copy if you tried the mouse right click copy first. Sometimes, it means the computer really needs a reboot to begin working right again.

With XP, you can also try Control Panel ->System -> Advanced -> Performance Settings ->Adjust for best performance. Remember you can always set it back where it was if you need to.

Another thing to try is right click on your desktop and select Properties -> Appearance ->Effects and uncheck the top box that controls fade or scroll effect for your menus.

Sorry, I am not using Vista on this machine and don’t know if the settings are the same for that software.
